How much athletic ability does it take?  You should be reasonably flexible for your age and in good health.  For a more  complete understanding of ability and requirements check the webpages for our programs below.

Is it hard to learn?  No.  At first you are taught the basic movement pattern.  Afterwards it will take time and practice to learn how to apply power and force to move the shell effectively.  Remember, most people can be taught a basic golf swing in about 15 minutes, but it takes patience and time to improve in the sport.

Can I compete competitively or can I row recreationally to stay fit? How does it work?  You can do either.  After learning how to row, you can find those individuals in our masters program who want to compete and put together competitive lineups for races. If you are interested in rowing for recreation or to stay fit, then there are three times during the week that people meet as a group to practice.  Youth interested in rowing typically do not row recreationally and opt for the competitive high school program.

What is the difference between Master and Junior level Rowing?  Masters are adults who are age 21 and older or who have graduated from college.  Junior are those students age 13 to 18 who are enrolled in high school.

How long are the boats and what are they made out of? Tell me about them?  The correct term is actually "shell" not boat.  The longest shell is around 59 feet long.  They are made out of fiberglass and carbon to reduce weight, maintain stiffness, and handle stress.  The heaviest shell weighs around 250 pounds and is carried by eight people. The lightest shell weighs around 35 pounds and is carried by one person.  Like automobiles, shells are manufactured by many companies with many colors, methods of construction, types of materials, various designs, and specific applications.

Where are the regattas?  The regattas that our club travels to are typically within the Southeast with several held locally in Aiken. During the year, the club will travel  to Atlanta, Columbia, Orlando, Knoxville, Oak Ridge, and Gainesville.  Occasionally, the club will travel to other cities like Cincinnati, Philadelphia, and Boston.  Regatta locations depend upon the individual programs within the Augusta Rowing Club.

What type of workout can I expect to get?  Rowing utilizes most of the muscle groups of the body in a mostly aerobic workout.  The motion begins with a power application through the legs that initiates speed in the shell.  The torso, back, and arms complete the motion by maintaining speed through the end of the stroke.

How old is too old?  People can learn in their sixties and row well into their eighties.  There are racing categories for competitors in their eighties.  The age  for our adult Master's Program typically ranges from the early twenties to the mid sixties.

How young is too young?  The Augusta Rowing Club will typically not teach and/or train children below age 13. Our high school program usually takes students age 14 and above starting in the 9th grade. Exceptions are made for younger students who have significantly developed growth-wise faster than their peers.

Where can I get more specific information about rowing?  There are numerous rowing links available on the web that provide information about the sport and its influence worldwide.  If you are interested in learning more about the sport, here are some that can help you get started.
